I often ask myself whether I am an artist or a photocopier . . . .

I hope I’m an artist. But if that’s true, then my images can’t just reproduce what I see. They need to stand for something more. And that means that reproducing the scene is not the point. So my images exist as metaphors for things beyond their literal selves.
