I created this image for an exhibition about the human impact on the Earth. It’s called the Forest.

In a way, this is an extreme example of my tendency to photograph what isn’t there. There is no forest. It’s been reduced to a single tree.

But is that really true? Look again. See the pylons in the background? Perhaps they are a forest. One designed to spread electric energy throughout much of Victoria.

Therein lies a contradiction of modern times. We destroy. But we also create. And modern life has depended on both. I depict boththe destruction and the creation, and ask whether what we’ve lost is worth it. But I don’t answer the question.
