This is a chimney without a building. On its own, the image is a good example of my interest in what is not there.

The title, The Monument, adds something new because this is obviously not a monument. Yet the chimney is all that remains of what once stood here, casting it in the role of a monument whether it wants to be or not.

And that raises a question about monuments. Every society builds monuments to itself. Usually they celebrate the best things a society tells itself about itself. But are those really the monuments that will be left behind? Are they what will be remembered?
