I live in a part of Australia known for coal powered generating stations. The juxtaposition between nature and industry is a theme that appears often for me. Here, represented by the tree and the cooling tower.
To me, it’s a tragedy that industry has destroyed so much of the natural world. But places like this power station are also necessary to modern life, only recently becoming possible to replace with more sustainable alternatives.
So, on balance, have we gained or lost? I don’t answer the question. I only ask it.
At the same time, this image has acquired a second meaning today. Anti-immigrant rhetoric in Australia raises the question of who belongs here. The juxtaposition of industry and nature raises the same question: who and what belongs here?
